A seven-month-old child been diagnosed with asthma after living in a mouldy flat.

Young Charlie Smith has just been diagnosed by his doctor following on-going issues with damp at his family home in Hambledon Gardens in Wallington.

Brothers and sisters have also been diagnosed with upper respiratory tract infections, which the doctor has said is being exacerbated by the mould in the flat.

In a letter, the family GP said: "I can confirm that Bailey White, Summerleigh White and Charlie White all have upper respiratory tract symptoms which are much more aggravated and prolonged due to mouldy accommodation. I fully support their application to either remove the mould or move the family to alternative accommodation."

Mother-of-four Charleigh Smith, said: "It is horrifying to know that where I live is destroying my child's health, but I have asked to go elsewhere but I have been told there is nowhere else. I have been a council tenant for ten years now and we have always had problems here. They came and re plastered the walls and put in vents a few years ago, but it hasn't really helped."

Miss Smith, 27, said her youngest has had health problems since they moved him into the house. She said: "He has had a viral infection, then a double viral infection and that didn't get any better, and now he has been diagnosed with Asthma, it's terrible."

A spokesman for the Sutton Housing Partnership, who manage Sutton Council's housing stock, said: "Following an inspection by a surveyor we have found that the build up of mould in the property has been has been caused by condensation on very cold surfaces. The issue has been made worse by the discovery of a number of defective storage heaters and we have placed an order to have these repaired as quickly as possible."
