A 12-year-old carer who juggles schoolwork with looking after his family has been nominated as an unsung hero.

Kingston Young Carers’ Network nominated Christiaan Sackey who looks after his disabled mother and six-year-old brother.

The Southborough High schoolboy unexpectedly became a carer after his father moved out of their family home in Priory Road, Chessington last spring.

The year Seven pupil said: “Before it was much easier because my dad was around and he could take care of things, but now it is harder.

“At times I feel upset because there is a lot to do but I do not have a choice. I really love my mum and brother.

“My mum is really caring, but at the same time she can only do what she can.”

Christiaan enjoys playing football, using his laptop and playing Xbox in his spare time – although he admits he does not have very much spare time on his hands.

He said: “My mum is in bed all day, so I take my little brother to school.

“My neighbour is really helpful and sometimes takes him. I make the food. I make pasta a lot. And meatballs.

“It makes me proud that I can look after my family.

“I do not feel like I am missing out on anything.

I go on all school trips. I only do not go to the ones that are overnight.”

Christiaan said he looked forward to visits from his grandmother who enjoys cooking for the family.

His favourite television show is Match of the Day.

His mother, Christa Sackey-Poppelliers, said: “Since his father moved out he has been amazing. He is my little hero. Without him I would not be able to survive. I am so proud of him.

“Both my boys are really good kids. I am very lucky to have them.”
