A skier from Cobham has been chosen to represent Great Britain at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea next year.

Athletes were chosen from 73 skiers with learning disabilities who qualified at Special Olympics Great Britain’s National Alpine Ski Championships in Pila, Italy, earlier this year.

Mikael Undrom, 25, who has been skiing since the age of three, won two gold medals, allowing him to advance to the Games.

Mr Undrom said: “Sport has always played a large part in my life. Taking part in sport makes me feel good and confident.

“I feel as if I am doing something worthwhile. I meet interesting people and make new friends wherever I go.”

In addition to alpine skiing, Mr Undrom is also an avid golfer, footballer and track and field athlete.

Mr Undrom has been recognised for his athletic achievements by the community, and has received a number awards over recent years.

Mr Undrom’s mother Elsie Undrom said: “Mikael has worked very hard on his training for alpine skiing and is now very enthusiastic to be able to compete at the highest level.

“I am proud that he has the opportunity to compete for the country on a world stage to demonstrate and emphasise ability, not disability.”

Mr Undrom said: “I have done Special Olympics for two years now and their activities play a large part in my life. Sport is a great way to keep fit and to meet new people and I am proud to be going to South Korea.”

More than 100 nations will participate in the event in South Korea, with 2,800 athletes with intellectual disabilities taking part.

The competition takes places in PyeongChang from January 26 to February 6, 2013.
