Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road accident in Wimbledon during the early hours of this morning.
A pedestrian died after he was knocked over in Kingston Road, at the junction of Sandringham Avenue, close to Wimbledon Chase railway station.
The vehicle is thought to have mounted the pavement before colliding with the victim shortly before 4.25am.
The driver stopped at the scene and was breathalysed as a matter of course but police are refusing to disclose the results of the breath test.
London Ambulance Service also attended but the victim - a 34-year-old man - was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident.
Police say they believe they know the identity of the dead man but await formal identification.
A postmortem examination will be scheduled in due course.
The collision investigation unit, based at Hampton Traffic Garage, is investigating. If anyone has any information they should call the witness appeal line on 020 8941 9011.
A man aged in his mid-30s was arrested at the scene and taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody.
