Crystal Palace-based Meretto release their new single Devotion on Monday, followed by their second album Street Talking in November. Here, guitarist Stu Bell talks to Graham Moody about the new material, working with Dan Swift and his ideal festival line-up.

Graham Moody: Describe your new single and upcoming album?

Stu Bell: The album is really just a snap-shot of modern urban life. The single is about that relentless daily grind of going to work and spending eight hours there wishing you could do something better. I wrote the song when all my friends started to get proper jobs and were reluctant to come out and play in the week.

GM: Working with Dan Swift (Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro) on Street Talking must have been good?

SB: Yeah, he really added some energy to the mixes. We would have liked to have worked with him from the start but we didn't meet him until we had recorded the album. He mixed most of the tracks on the LP though. The album was recorded at our good friend John Mitchell's (currently fronting It Bites) studio - we always have fun there.

GM: How did the band come together?

SB: Matt and I were in a band called Bagpuss when we were teenagers and it just followed on from there a few years back - various incarnations later here were are. I think we are on our fourth drummer or something.

GM: What's the favourite venue you have played in London?

SB: Either the Borderline earlier this year or the Barfly last Autumn, we had a lot of fun at those gigs.

GM: Are there any bands you feel have heavily influenced your music?

SB: I grew up when Britpop was big so I guess that all those bands have influenced me. I am very partial to some good eighties tracks and the occasional prog track.

GM: What would be your ideal festival line-up?

SB: Blur, Marillion, Nine Inch Nails, Talk Talk, Duran Duran, something like that.

GM: What would be your nightmare festival line-up?

SB: Travis or Dido!

GM: What's your dream?

SB: To do Meretto without having to work for a living - headlining Reading Festival would be good too!
