Last month, while temperatures were soaring one Friday night, the Cabbage Patch in Twickenham turned out to be the coolest place for miles – and it wasn’t all down to the air conditioning.

Congregating to listen to the Errol Linton Band serve up their blend of Jamaican-influenced Brixton blues, the audience were first treated to a surprise set from local and very-much-happening band, The Carnabys.

So started an evening that gave us everything that’s good about a trip to Glastonbury’s John Peel and West Holts Stages, but with none of the pushing and shoving it takes to get from one t’other.

Winners of the 2013 Global Hard Rock Rising competition, The Carnabys played a confident acoustic set, keeping it short and tight. Jack Mercer’s husky vocals and a clutch of outstanding songs make them the band people will be watching as they head off on their imminent world tour.

The rest of the evening remained in good hands when the Errol Linton Band took the stage. Linton has won the British Best Harmonica Player three times, so quality was assured. On a hot summer’s night, the gentle reggae lilt to some of the songs and the laid back blues couldn’t have been more soothing. And when he wasn’t playing first-rate harmonica, Linton’s soft, soulful voice delivered some refreshingly original lyrics.

Job done. A very chilled audience headed home.

If last Friday’s anything to go by, let’s hope promoters Phil Penman and Kevin Jones will be pulling some more quality acts out of the Drumfire hat before long.
