The hall is full of nervous candidates and their supporters with a palpable atmosphere of tension.

Counters anxiously hover by the tables to get a straw poll of votes by looking at the amount of votes coming in for each party and drawing up a rough list.

Mitcham and Morden Conservative candidate Paul Holmes arrives with his mother, father, sister and partner on the left.

More and more candidates and their supporters will be arriving throughout the night at the Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham.

Merton Conservatives leader Oonagh Moulton and chairman Henry Nelless are both here, eagerly awaiting results.

Councillor Moulton said it feels like she has walked a marathon on the campaign trail for her party, not just in Merton but all over London.

Des Coke, Christian Peoples Alliance candidate said he hoped his party would win some seats nationally but otherwise a Conservative and Labour coalition would be realistic.

Richard Hilton (Mitcham and Morden UKIP candidate) said he thinks it is looking positive for them.

He has been canvassing in south Thanet for party leader Nigel Farage and former Merton councillor and UKIP deputy chairman Suzanne Evans as well as on his own patch.

Liberal Democrat candidate for Wimbledon Shas Sheehan said she is not too hopeful looking at the early results.

Mr Hilton said: “On the TweetUKElection feed it puts us at fifth overall.

“We have the potential to be in the running for second best.

“People are feeling neglected, especially in Ravensbury ward, which is bad when it’s the leader’s ward.”

Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Council, has not yet been spotted on the ground, nor has Stephen Hammond, who is hoping to hold onto his job as Wimbledon MP for the next term.

Paul Holmes, hoping to win in Mitcham and Morden, turned up with his family and partner to see the night's results.

He said: "I feel confident that we will reduce the Labour majority in Mitcham and Morden.

"It is looking like Colliers Wood is going well for us.

"It shows that people are not believing the scandalous campaign that Labour are running about Save St Helier."

He added he was looking forward to the rest of the count and some sleep afterwards.

Siobhain McDonagh, going head-to-head with others in Mitcham and Morden, is also no-where to be seen as of 1.14am and is expected at 2am.

The count is expected to go on until at least 3am.
