Organisers of the Sutton Community Awards 2021 have launched the event with a call for nominees in the borough.

With the ceremony due to take place this February, those behind it are keen for people in the borough to get their nominations in as early as possible so some of the most remarkable community heroes and groups stand a chance of being recognized for their contributions.

The Sutton Community Awards are organised by Community Action Sutton, Sutton Housing Partnership, Volunteer Centre Sutton, and Sutton Council.

Last year's event saw some 270 people be nominated for their efforts in their communities, with the winners including "individuals, volunteers and community groups that have made an exceptional contribution to making Sutton a better place to live, work and raise a family".

For the 2021 event the awards will be broken down into 10 categories, including four new awards for this year:

1. The Outstanding Community Champion Award

2. The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award (new)

3. The Environment Champion Award (new)

4. The Outstanding Volunteer Award

5. The Outstanding Volunteering Group Award

6. The Outstanding Young Person Award

7. The Outstanding Voluntary and Community Sector Organisation of the Year Award

8. The Sue Robson Trustee of the Year Award

9. The Innovator of the Year Award (new)

10. The Lifetime Achievement Award (new)

Previous winners include Sutton Young Carers Ambassadors (Volunteer Award) and Daniel Reader, a neighbour who "put his safety on the line" to tackle anti-social behaviour and improve housing in his neighbourhood (Outstanding Neighbour Awards).

The nominations for 2021 are open from Monday 22 November until 5pm on Friday 17 December. The physical awards ceremony will take place in mid February (venue and date TBC) and will be live streamed on the Council's YouTube channel.
