In relation to recent articles about the planned relocation of Croydon delivery office, I would like to reassure your readers that Royal Mail is committed to retaining a delivery operation in Croydon.

As we first announced in December 2012, we have found a new site for this office as the existing site is no longer fit for purpose.

The new site is on the Wandle Park Trading Estate, Factory Lane, Croydon and we expect it will be operational from early in 2014.

Customers do not need to travel to the delivery office to pick up undelivered items of mail. We can now leave many of these items with a neighbour (apart from Special Delivery items and inbound international items that require a signature) if customers are not at home when we attempt delivery.

Alternatively, customers can arrange a redelivery free of charge on a day that is convenient for them, or we can deliver the item to a different address within the same postcode area. This service can be arranged by calling the number on the card we leave or by visiting our website at

We will be writing to customers about the forthcoming move very soon.

The planned new delivery office in Croydon will provide a better working environment for our people and better facilities for customers, including visitor parking.

It is part of the ongoing modernisation of our operations across the UK to ensure we have world-class facilities to provide the most efficient and effective network for sorting and delivering mail for our customers.

We submitted a planning application for the proposed redevelopment of our existing delivery office site in Addiscombe Road several weeks ago.

This follows a public consultation on our proposal, which we held in June 2013. This helped to inform the application.

We also consulted Croydon Council on our proposal and have provided input where appropriate.

Our proposal seeks to provide a new mixed-use development including residential and retail space.

This could also generate employment opportunities in the wider local economy. We do not expect the relocation of our office will have any impact on the first class service we want to continue providing to our customers in Croydon.

Steve C Selby; Royal Mail Delivery Director - Croydon
