This September, Norbury Station has been undergoing a major refurbishment. It started with the addition of a cafe and the installation of barriers, and the ramp from the ticket office to the platform has had new windows fitted and a new roof. The platforms have been levelled, there are new bench seats and the whole station has been re-painted. There are even plans to refurbish the ticket office and provide better facilities for the public.

I spoke to one commuter who said, β€œIt’s a grand old station, but desperately needs refurbishment. I am glad to see Southern are investing in facilities for passengers. It makes train travel a much more pleasant experience.”

Norbury station may be small and on the outskirts of Croydon, but it is well-used by local people, travelling both into London and Croydon and these passengers deserve to embark and disembark trains in a pleasant environment with modern facilities. In addition, it is worth spending money improving the station, as it makes the local community proud of their railway station and their area. Passengers travelling through Norbury will get a good impression of the town if they see a clean and modern station.

The station was built in 1905 and has seen the transition from steam to electricity. The building is a wonderful example of Edwardian architecture, but until now it was beginning to look quite run-down. It is good that it is now being preserved for future generations to admire and make use of.
