To celebrate with some Halloween spirit, a ‘Horrible Ewell Halloween Walk’ took place on the 25th of October. It was a 1 and a half hour walk through the towns of Epsom and Ewell, in a group of 25, which helped you discover their dark past and realise that they weren’t always the kind towns that they are today.

You learnt about many things such as exploding gunpowder mills and visited St Mary’s graveyard where the people that lost their lives in the incident lie. You, heard tales about witches and gruesome murder, coach crashes ghosts and a strange one was funerals without a body! Furthermore you learnt about the body snatchers and saw where they practiced their horrible trade.

The final part of the walk was a visit to the 18th century jail and a chance to see what it was like. This part of the walk was quite scary as there was a very eerie atmosphere, with all of the stories being told as to why people were locked up and the crimes that they had committed.

It was a great experience that as well as really bringing out the sense of Halloween, educated you about your local area. An interview with someone that attended the walk revealed what he thought about it. He said: “I learnt many things about my local area and found out a great amount of things that I never knew before. If it wasn’t for this walk, I and many other people would have never got the chance to find out all of the information that they had obtained by the end of the walk.” It was an extremely interesting and fascinating venture through the towns and is sure to have left most people that went, curious about what else happened in the historic past of Epsom and Ewell.
