The leading supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is coming to the small town of Southfield. Currently Southfields is home to many independent supermarkets and newsagents such as Budgens and Southfields Food and Wine. Budgens, previously known as Johnny Walker has been in Southfields for many years and at the moment is the most popular supermarket in the town for local residents and passing visitors. However recently three local shops, Film Studio, PWP and Haart estate agents have closed down in order for a modern day supermarket. Sainsbury’s was first founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury in London and has now grown to become one of the UK’s largest retailers. With such a well-known store coming to Southfields how is this going to affect neighbouring stores like Budgens? Will their profit sales drop? This is the likely story, however only time will tell. I interviewed Hitesh Patel who is the owner of Budgens, he said that margins will go down completely and margins are very important to the shops profits. He said he would have to cut back on staff hours and costs, which he has never had to do before. He also said that customers will have less choice at his shop in comparison to Sainsbury’s therefore lose custom which will cause problems in the future. A letter from the Wandsworth council states that traffic in the area will increase because of the 21 delivery Lorries per week. The arrival of Sainsbury’s will add even more congestion to this already precarious junction. It would seriously threaten the viability of these local shops and would irreversibly change the character of Southfields. The arrival of Sainsbury’s into Southfields is not popular with the local residents or the local stores. People are worried that it will change the atmosphere of the tightknit community.
