Many teenagers in the local area today studying at a sixth form, such as my own Ursuline High School are trying to gain qualifications and juggle work at the same time. This can be an overload and causes stress and anxiety in young people. There is no way a student can hold a full time job if they attend a sixth form or even college? Therefore they usually work part time. For students who don’t work at all, with no income and small amounts of pocket money, they have no money to spend on weekends; this might be why some are sadly tempted to drink alcohol in parks late at night and it is no wonder people complain about this.

Nevertheless, millions of students have had part time jobs and have simultaneously achieved the A level grades they wanted. This could mean that exam success depends not just on the academic ability but on the excellent organisational skills of the student. However, most students who have a job are more likely to have less independent study time and therefore end up doing less well in exams. Therefore teachers are now asking their students whether they work or not and are suggesting that they don’t do so. A teacher from Ursuline High School, Miss Yvonne Symcox said “students should keep a balanced lifestyle with social interactions and studies”. The reason for this is that all A-level subjects demand a lot of time and effort and balancing work, social life and school is going to be emotionally, physically and intellectually challenging.

It is very important for the students to do well in their studies to achieve the career they want. The Country will rely on the students of today to build a better society: through creating enough resources and providing the technological and other skills that will be needed. Of course parents also want the best for their children and are likely to show them the way forward and help them making tough decisions such as whether or not to go to university or whether to work and endanger their studies. Overall students are likely to make the best success by focusing fully on their studies and not working.
