During the Manchester United vs Burnley match in the premier league, Gary Neville ( whilst commentating) announced that many premier league teams are going to be part of a Super League consisting of many of the world’s best teams. The teams who have signed up from the premier league are : Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. Many people ( both famous and your everyday person) believe that this is a disgraceful decision and the clubs that have signed up should be ashamed of themselves. The English government and the FA do not approve of this decision made which shows that they believe this is not a good idea for various reasons. Quoting Roy Keane when he was speaking at the half time analysis of the Man United vs Burnley game he said that the clubs were being “ greedy” and this has become many people’s opinion on this Super League. Might I add that this Super League consists of many other teams in the world such as : Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus,AC Milan and Atlético Madrid, so therefore it is not just the English premier league clubs who are causing controversy.

When speaking to Kuba Golczynski he said that  “In my opinion, this supposedly 'revolutional' European Super League will ruin football as we know it. The 12 teams that have joined and signed letters of consent have completely disregarded the structure of the football pyramid and the lower league teams that play within it. Fans of these clubs, both lower and higher teir, live for exctitement, the win against the top team, and this proposed idea of a Super League jeopardises that. To my understanding this idea has been fueled by greed of the owners of these top-flight clubs, with no consideration or empathy towards the players whatsoever. FIFA and UEFA have clearly stated that the players competing in this tournament will be banned from their domestic leagues and The FIFA World Cup, set to take place in Qatar in 2022. Due to this, I believe players will leave their clubs and terminate their contracts as playing for your nation is one of the most respectable and aspirational thing for a footballer to do. We have seen on multiple occasions how players have been ruined and corrupted just for the sake of money.”

Rumours have been going around that some of the conditions of the Super League will be that none of the players taking part will be able to represent their countries ( with the Euros coming up that has been a massive talking point) which personally, I believe is disgraceful with upcoming players such as Phil Foden, Mason Greenwood, the list goes on and them not being able to represent their countries anymore is embarrassing and the owners of those clubs should be ashamed of themselves. Also, none of the teams taking part will be able to take part in any sort of competitions including their domestic leagues. Gary Neville, along with many others mentioned that the authorities need to do something about keeping these teams in their leagues, whether it is taking points away from them or other sanctions.

Overall, I personally believe that this Super League ( which had been talked about for many years) had the potential to be excellent, but, right now is not the time to be introducing something like this. It is not the time because many clubs have suffered economically from Covid 19 and these clubs will gain lots of money from just being part of the competition which arguably is not fair for other teams which are not part of the Super League. Or, don’t make it instead of other competitions and allow it to be another competition that clubs can be part of rather than instead of other cups and leagues.
