With Earth Day looming on Thursday 22nd April, a green new vision for the London Borough of Wandsworth is hoping to tackle the ever-present threats posed by climate change.

In light of next week’s Earth Day, I though it prudent to reflect upon the work of Wandsworth Council’s green new vision for ensuring Wandsworth Borough plays its part in London’s attempts to tackle the pervading issues of climate change.

Particular attention has been drawn to increasing Wandsworth Common’s biodiversity, Wandsworth walking and cycling infrastructure as well as supporting green homes install solar panels.

With the key concepts of sustainability and renewability at the heart of this green new vision there is hope that these reforms to Wandsworth’s environment will not only help mitigate against the impacts of climate change, but will also benefit the community and local economy.

It is evident that much progress has been made in ensuring Wandsworth’s greener future; in the past 12 months Wandsworth Council has switched all council electricity to 100 per cent zero carbon electricity, hosted the first annual Climate Summit attended by over 650 residents and secured £1 million to support home improvements to homes with poor energy efficiency.

Looking to the future, Wandsworth Council has made it clear that they want to continue on their green trajectory with plans to launch an extensive tree planting programme with a further 600 trees planted by the end of April 2022 as well as 1000 new street trees.

Cleary, there is much to be hopeful for the Wandsworth community this upcoming Earth Day. As put by local Wandsworth Common resident Michael Smith, "I look forward to a greener future for Wandsworth."
