On Thursday the 28th of February, the lecture series intelligence² held a lecture on ‘Letters that Changed the World.’ This lecture, given by Simon Sebag Montefiore and Kate Mosse, involved the reading of letters from history by various actors, including Tamsin Greg and Jack Lowden, and was overall incredibly fascinating.
One of the people who attended it, Gillian Hughes, notes how ‘the talk brought the letters to life and injected character. Having the letters performed elicited emotional responses’ that she did not think she would get otherwise.
Extracts included a letter written by Alan Turing on the day that his homosexuality was discovered, and one particularly moving one from a woman in a Nazi concentration camp writing to her husband, who survived the ordeal while she did not. The lecture was based on Sebag’s book of the same name, and was overall a very interesting experience.
