Aria has been on an inspiring journey to overcome her difficulties due to her epilepsy and other life events. She began riding at a young age yet was forced to stop after a severe fall, which made her question if she would ever ride a horse again. Sadly, her dad passed away and he was very fond of horses which encouraged her to get back into horse riding, so that she could feel connected to her dad.

Having a condition that meant that she could have multiple seizures every day, Aria was turned away by the majority of stables as they felt they were not equipped to deal with her needs. However, Barnfield Riding School welcomed her, as they would with any other customer. Riding has given Aria a sense of purpose and helped to develop her confidence. She struggled to go out with friends as there was always the worry of her having a fit and others judging her. The staff are professionally trained to deal with such situations and calmly deal with her seizures. Here not only were they accepting of her condition but she developed close friendships with both the staff and other clients. For the first time, Aria felt able to go out by herself to Kingston town centre. This was something she could have never envisioned herself doing when she lacked confidence.

Coming to the stables has allowed her to feel in control and makes her realise that she can do things independently. Having experienced feeling like you are different to everyone else and fearing people were judging you, she welcomed this environment where she was treated just like anyone else. No one was alarmed if Aria had a seizure, no one looked at her in shock and she was able to finally be herself. Aria goes to the stables four times a week to volunteer and to ride. When too much pressure is put upon her, the risk of her having a seizure dramatically increases. Aria’s stress levels have reduced as her confidence increased whilst riding. Aria feels more positive and more socially accepted. Not only had the stables helped her feel connected to her dad but they have helped her to develop as a person whilst doing something she really enjoys.

It can be challenging feeling like you are different and scared that others may be wary or apprehensive around you. Horse riding has provided Aria with a sense of belonging and being in control. Aria has learnt to cope better with her condition and fully participate in this rewarding activity to build her confidence and self esteem.
