Formally known as Spelthorne School, Meadhurst Primary School have changed their uniform from a crimson red to an aruba blue colour, in hope they can also save their reputation, after a shocking Ofsted Report on the 3rd of May 2017. Located in Ashford Middlesex in County Surrey, the primary school opened its doors for the first time on the 1st of January 1900. Until 2017 had always been classed as a ‘Good’ School in every full inspection. However, on the 3rd of May 2017 was ranked as ‘Inadequate’, with a key factor being that the school was much bigger than other primary schools across the nation. Shortly after the Spelthorne’s reputation was tarnished, the Headteacher Amy Daniels decided something must be done. The changes included altering the uniform and name of the school, but simply changing the appearance will not deceive Ofsted. A former student at the school, Amelia Lovell, was not particularly impressed by the attempts of change and was more saddened by the Ofsted report. “when I went to Spelthorne it was a pretty good school, but ever since I have left, and my sisters have been in the school it has just went downhill. In my opinion the change to the name and the uniform was just a way to get away from the bad reputation they have” Now called Meadhurst Primary School, they also decided to join The Howard Partnership Trust with faith that the school can improve in the eyes of Ofsted. With regards to the Ofsted system, the highest score a school can get is a 1 (Outstanding) and the lowest is a 4 (Inadequate) which is what the primary school had previously obtained. So, what is the Howard Partnership Trust? THPT is a Multi-Academy Trust founded in November 2013. Many local primary and secondary schools are involved in the Trust after the Academies Act of 2010: it was declared that state schools can apply become academy converters. Many other schools are involved all of which are cater for special educational needs. The Howard of Effingham School is a state Secondary School in Leatherhead, Surrey; they are an outstanding school and the lead school in the Trust. There is an opportunity for parents to have their say on ‘Parent View’ on the Ofsted website, which allows parents to be able to give their opinion on their child’s education and quality of school. Many people want Meadhurst to be a great school again, so we all aspire to believe that these changes will push the school in a positive direction.
