Michael Brown was 18 years old when Darren Wilson, 28, a white police officer from the Ferguson Police Department, shot him dead on The 9th August 2014.

According to Johnson, a close friend of Brown who was with him at the time of the murder, Wilson "approached us, and as he pulled up on the side of us, he didn’t say ‘freeze,’ ‘halt,’ or nothing like we were committing a crime. He said, ‘Get the f—- on the sidewalk!’ I told the officer we were not but a minute away from the destination.”

What happened next is uncertain - witnesses have their accounts as do the police and Darren Wilson – however, what can be certain is that there was a physical struggle between Brown and Wilson, due to Michael’s DNA being found in the police car.

Wilson claimed that “punches started flying”. What is odd about this statement is that Brown, a man 80lbs heavier than Wilson, did not create more damage to his face.

Despite Brown informing the officer multiple times that he was unarmed, the first shot was fired from Officer Wilson’s gun. This is when Michael began to flee. Shortly after this, Brown was hit in the arm; he then turned to Wilson and cried, “don’t shoot”. Collectively he was shot six times, with one shot to the head. Brown died 150 feet from the car, however, Wilson estimated "Brown ran 20-30 feet away from the car and then charged another 10 feet back towards him."; this makes it impossible that he charged another ten feet.

Wilson described the incident before Brown was killed: “The only way I can describe it, it (Michael) looks like a demon, that’s how angry he looked. He comes back towards me again with his hands up.” Referring to Michael as ‘it’ and calling him a demon. What indication does this give as to what Wilson was thinking when he murdered Brown?

The police department released footage that supposedly showed Brown robbing a local convenience shop; this was supposedly the ‘reason’ for Wilson’s attack on Brown. However, the attorney of the shop owner said, “Whatever the police are looking for on the surveillance tape, has nothing to do with what went on in the street.”

Michael was left on the street for four and a half hours; no ambulance was called and his mother did not even get to see her son’s body.

From here on, peaceful protests demanding justice for Mike Brown began in Ferguson. These protestors were attacked and blasted with tear gas by the police force.

Wilson had nearly four months of paid leave, in which time a fundraiser for him raised over $400,000. Wilson got married and a Grand Jury came to their decision to not indict Darren Wilson.

We have been transported back to the 1950s: Black Americans are being demonised and hated. Darren Wilson shot and killed an unarmed teenager with no motive and he will not face so much as a trial. The crime system in the United States is currently inflicting one the most severe forms of racism the country has seen in the past several decades.

This is only a very short summary of the severity of the current hate crimes in the US. ‘White Privilege’ is truly at its peak, and most white American citizens are oblivious.

A life has been violently taken before it could barely begin. In this moment, we know, beyond any doubt, that no one will be held accountable within the confines of a system to which we were taught to pledge allegiance.
The very hands with which we pledged that allegiance were not enough to save Mike in surrender.
