Tommy Wright made it five goals in two days with a first-half hat-trick as Sutton United mauled Molesey 7-1 in the Surrey Senior Cup on Monday night.

Wright scored both goals in Saturday's 2-0 win at Gateshead and the lethal marksman continued his impressive season with three more in the opening 45 minutes against the lowly Bostik League South side.

Sutton used the game to field seven first team members while giving some of the academy squad a chance to play alongside the likes of Dean Beckwith, Simon Downer and Simon Walton - three players with vast Football League experience.

Wright grabbed the opener in the 17th minute and went on to complete his treble with goals in the 34th and 37th minutes.

Ross Lafayette also found the target in the 20th minute as the U's went in at half-time four goals to the good.

Wright and Beckwith were replaced at half-time and the U's soon added three further goals through a Walton penalty on 53 minutes, Lafayette (55) and Kieron Cadogan (60).

Despite being seven goals behind, Molesey stuck to the task and were rewarded in the 68th minute when Tayo Oyebola netted a consolation.

Sutton took their foot off the gas in the closing stages to ease through to the quarter-finals of a competition they last won in 2003.

United host Bostik Premier Division side Hendon this Saturday (January 13) in the second round of the Buildbase FA Trophy. Kick-off is 3pm.
