DAYANA Yastremska, an emotional loser in Sunday's Fuzion 100 Ilkley Trophy women's singles final, has bounced back with a win.

The 18-year-old Ukrainian, who was beaten 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) by the Czech Republic's Tereza Smitkova, defeated tenth seed Magdalena Frech (Poland) 6-3, 6-2 today in the first round of qualifying for Wimbledon at Roehampton.

Russia's Evgeniya Rodina, who won at Ilkley in 2016 and was a quarter-finalist this year, was the quickest winner of the day at the Bank of England Sports Centre, despatching China's Fangzhou Liu 6-1, 6-0 in just 37 minutes.

It was a tough day for the Britons, however, with Freya Christie, Samantha Murray, Maia Lumsden, Emma Radacanu, Francesca Jones and Tara Moore all bowing out of the women's singles.

Christie lost 6-3, 6-3 to top seed Tamara Zidansek (Slovenia), while Murray went out 6-1, 6-1 to 21st seed Vitalia Diatchenko (Russia) in only 48 minutes – the same time as it took Ankita Raina (India) to defeat Lumsden.

Keighley-based Jones was beaten 6-4, 6-2 by fifth seed Nicole Gibbs, but at least detained the American for 1hr 23min, while 15-year-old Radacanu was on court for 2hr 13min before succumbing 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to Barbara Stefkova (Czech Republic).

That was a relatively quick game, however, compared to the marathon between Russians Irina Khromacheva and Valentyna Ivakhnenko, which the former won 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in three minutes under three hours.

Moore, who has links with Doncaster, was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Irina Bara (Romania).

Ilkley entrants this year who are seeded at Roehampton and triumphed, Gibbs apart, were Sara Sorribes Tormo and Irina Falconi.

Tormo, seeded 31st, won a switchback all-Spanish affair 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Paula Badosa Gibert, while 24th-seeded American Falconi despatched Tereza Martincova for the loss of two games per set.

Bibiane Schoofs (Netherlands), a victim of Smitkova in the final qualifying round at Ilkley despite being top seed, lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in 2hr 13min to 22-year-old Austrian Barbara Haas.

Among the other winners who played at Ilkley were Richel Hogenkamp (Netherlands), Bianca Andreescu (Canada), Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic), Elena Gabriela Ruse (Romania) and Arina Rodionova (Australia).

Some of those defeated included American Lauren Davis, while former Wimbledon runners-up Eugenie Bouchard and Sabine Lisicki experienced mixed fortunes.

Canadian Bouchard, the losing finalist in 2014, won 6-0, 6-2 against Chinese 18th seed Lin Xhu, while Lisicki, who reached the showpiece match in 2013, lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to 19-year-old Russian Anna Kalinskaya.

In the second round of the men's singles, Great Britain's James Ward defeated former Ilkley entrant Bjorn Fratangelo (United States) 6-4, 6-4 to put himself one match away from qualifying.

However, Dan Evans' winning Wimbledon run ended at four matches when he was beaten 6-0, 6-3 by Germany's Matthias Bachinger, while Lloyd Glasspool was defeated 7-5, 6-4 by experienced Frenchman Stephane Robert.

Ilkley wild card Alex ward fell 6-2, 6-2 to 2017 Ilkley runner-up Alex Bolt (Australia).

There were victories for eighth seed Peter Polansky (Canada), 11th seed Hubert Hurkacz (Poland), 16th seed Thoas Fabbiano and 25th seed Stefano Travaglia (Italy).

However, Ilkley semi-finalists Jason Kubler (Australia) and Michael Mmoh (United Staes) again showed their mettle.

Kubler put out 26th seed Adam Kovlasek (Czech Republic) 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 in 2hr 29min, while 19th seed Mmoh defeated experienced Egyptian Mohamed Safwat 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-0 in a minute over two hours in the last match to finish.

Ilkley regular John-Patrick Smith defeated 10th seed Marcel Granollers (Spain) 6-3, 6-4, and Stefano Napolitano won the all-Italian battle 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 against Salvatore Caruso in 2hr 5min, but fifth seed Jurgen Zopp lost the longest match of the day 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 13-11 in 3hr 8min to Alessandro Giannessi (Italy).
