Warlingham Sevens team travelled to Mitcham on Saturday with a slightly depleted squad from the previous tournament at Old Caterhamians where they lost in the Final to Dorking.

The tournament consisted of 8 local teams from around the South-East area and was in aid of the Help the Heros charity. It was due to be an interesting day for Warlingham, playing against many local 7’s teams who they hadn’t previously encountered.

Warlingham cruised through the group stages and comfortably beat Old Tiffians, Purley John Fisher and Old Tonbridgians. They were playing some very exciting rugby and scored a total of 16 tries and concedrd only the solitary try. Shining lights for the team were Brad Saffery, Tom Street and the experienced Alex Glover.

The semi final was played against the home side Mitcham, but the story was much the same for Warlingham. This finished 9 tries to 0 for the ever improving young team.

The final was against Streatham and Croydon and proved to be a stern test for Warlingham. The final score was 24-0 to Warlingham but they were made to work hard for their victory and arguably produced there best performance of the day much to the delight of Head Sevens coach Richard Horton and his assistant Peter Wrightson who both did a splendid job in squad rotation and match tactics. Horton said after the final: "We're getting into gear now and, despite drafting in new younger players into the squad, we're playing some great sevens rugby."

Captain James Agate, returning from an injury, finished up top try scorer for the day with 9 tries.

Squad – Agate (capt), Street, Osborne, Wimble, Owen, Delderfield, Loakman, Atkinson, Wrightson, Saffery, Gates, Mcavoy, Glover.

Warlingham next appear at the prestigious Bournemouth 7’s Competition which attracts Invitation sides from senior clubs. Warlingham have won the competition for the last two years and are confident of making an impression for the third year in a row.
