A depleted Mitcham side put up a spirited performance against relegation threatened Old Glynonians at Priest Hill.

Veteran prop Tony Antoniou was drafted in at the last minute to bolster the already weighty Mitcham front row joining fellow veteran, hooker Steve Green.

Mitcham's unspectacular but effective game plan saw Mitcham camped in the Glynonians 22 for the first half hour of the game.

Some resolute defending by the home side kept Mitcham's driving forwards at bay until flanker Steve Burgess managed to crash over the line after 25 minutes.

Liam Dewsbury converted. Mitcham were unable to convert their pressure into further points with a succession of Mitcham forwards being stopped short of the line as was winger Enrique Ramos following a powerful run.

Mitcham took their foot off the pedal just before half time with a lack of concentration allowing the quick Glynonian backs to spin the ball wide and score twice just before the break.

Mitcham started the second half in similar fashion to the first with some powerful forward surges. Sam Bardwell's dominance in the line out saw the forwards set up a rolling maul from the Mitcham 22 and eventually earning a penalty on the home side 22.

Although Dewsbury missed the penalty Mitcham again piled on the pressure and were rewarded when Captain Mark Whittall broke the home defence from inside centre to score in the corner. A try saving tackle from impressive full back George Howe kept Mitcham in the game until Mitcham's injuries finally took their toll.

With scrum-half Ryan Jones and Captain Whittall playing on manfully despite injuries taken into the game, winger David Anthony also had to hobble on following a late tackle, as Mitcham had no substitutes to call upon. Again Glynonians broke wide in the last 5 minutes to score two further tries to seal the game.

Mitcham's final game in two weeks is away to mid table Old Amplefordians but Mitcham are hopeful that they have already done enough to stave off relegation with the bonus points picked up during the season.
