Streatham-Croydon kept their unbeaten start to the Surrey Four season going on Saturday as they drew 20-20 at the league's other unbeaten side, Guildfordians, writes Ben Alsop.

Playing on a sloping Stoke Park pitch, the match had a simple formula - score as many points as you can when gravity is with you and then defend resolutely when it is not.

The home side therefore amassed 17 points, the first five of which came from a highly disputed try, in the first half to Streatham-Croydon's five, scored in the left corner by Aaron Brown.

With the slope on their side in the second half Streatham touched down through Simon Hampton and Marian Manea, the latter a wonderful combination of agility and sheer force.

They took the lead following an interception that saw Brown gallop untouched toward the posts before he was denied a hat-trick when the referee overturned his decision to award a try after a Guildfordians protest.

The home side eventually drew level with a well-stuck penalty leaving coach Bob Dean fuming, "We should have won the match," he said.

"It was a disappointing day but when we played our game we were significantly the better side."

Streatham-Croydon stayed ahead of Guildfordians in the table but slipped to second following Haslemere's 29-0 win over Woking.

They face Old Oundelians at home on Saturday.
