Esher lost out as Samurai International claimed the first leg of the National Sevens Series in front of more than 5,000 music and rugby fans at Rugby Rocks in Richmond on Saturday.
The Molesey Road club had led 31-24 in the final, but Samurai - with former Sale Sharks winger Oriol Ripol in their line-up - found another gear to lift the crown.
Koru Kamikaze hammered POD 52-17 in the Men’s Open final, while England international Micheala Staniford’s hat-trick helped secure the women’s title for the Wooden Spoons with a 48-0 win over Saracens.
The National Sevens Series moves to Keynsham this weekend, before rounding off with events in Manchester and Newquay next month.
