Harlequin Ladies old and new took to the field at the Stoop on Saturday for the 10th Sue Moloney memorial game, in which they took on Dutch side Castricum Ladies.

An active member of the club, who set up the first incarnation of Harlequin Ladies’ youth academy, Sue lost her first against meningitis 10 years ago. Quins won the match 36-12.

Always an important occasion for Harlequin Ladies, we marked this day not only by playing at our home stadium, the Twickenham Stoop, but also by hosting an exciting and unknown opposition – Castricum Ladies from the Netherlands.

A fantastic collection of players, Quins’ supporters, friends and family gathered together to cheer on the Ladies as they took on the might of Holland. Standing on the pitch, the significance of the day was at the forefront of everyone’s minds as we strengthened our resolve to make this a superb rugby match in honour of Sue.

Quins Ladies stamped their mark on the game from the outset, breaking through the Dutch defence time and again. Castricum were not to be outdone, refusing to lie down and admit defeat in such a sumptuous arena, the kind few women’s rugby teams get the opportunity to enjoy. Alas, it was not to be their moment of glory and as Quins Ladies skipped through for their last try, the final whistle blew and elation swept through the stadium.

This was not yet the end however! A trip to the famous Ailsa Tavern provided the perfect venue for thanks, congratulations and memories. To all that played, supported and cheered – thanks once more for helping to mark this occasion. A great day was had by all and we ended it toasting a true Harlequin Lady.

Final score: 36 – 12 Harlequin Ladies’ Squad included: Jo Everett (Captain), Katherine Smith, Jo Ballentine, Kyra Howell, Jane Hoyes, Nat Smith, Fiona Eccleston, Shannon Mullen, Alex Leigh, Sarah Butler, Kirsty Rennison, Amy Smith, Steph Gagne, Katy Strudwick, Cally Hocknell, Chantel De Senna, Rhi Needham, Laura Quinn, Monica Coyne, Gemma Athorn, Chevonne Rennison.
