Director of rugby Chris Magowan has paid tribute to London Irish Amateurs for claiming the London Two South-West title on the back of 15 consecutive wins.

The Sunbury-based outfit, nicknamed the Wild Geese, clinched the title with a 37-3 victory at Winchester in their final match.

“The mental maturity of this team has been tested over recent weeks,” said MacGowan.

“Each time they have delivered under pressure.

“Other teams up their own game when playing against the league leaders and especially when that happens to be London Irish.

“Our team has an average age of only 23, with four 18-year-olds playing in Winchester.”

Success has followed two years after the launch of the Wolfhound Academy at the club, which has led to Charlie Connor and Scott Moore being inducted into the full academy. Both will play their rugby in New Zealand this summer under an exchange programme organised by the club before taking up their studies at St Mary’s University next year.

“The win has been two years in the making,” said manager Simon Martinson.

“We adopted a back-to-basics approach when flirting with relegation last season, but the lessons learnt have been the foundations of success this season.”

But the club are under no illusions that they could find life tough in London One next season, when they will come up against the likes of Sutton & Epsom.

Head coach Jamie Balls said: “It is a serious league and we know we will have to bulk up to be competitive.

“Pre-season conditioning programmes will begin in May.”
