Teddington have had an outstanding season and have remained unbeaten in league and friendly fixtures all season, writes Terry Brown.

They were deservedly crowned champions of Surrey League One some weeks ago. Whitgift, who had faltered a little in the later part of the season, were assured of the runner’s up spot a fortnight ealier.

A game which could have been a dead rubber was, instead, spirited, entertaining and exciting with both teams playing as if the success of the season depended on it.

The visitors created all the early pressure and, after two minutes, Todd put over a penalty to give them the lead.

Ten minutes later, the same player went over for a try which he himself also converted.

The home team now started to exert themselves and slowly came back into the game .

Whitfit defended well until the last five minutes of the half when Teddington scored two tries, one converted. The runaway champions were only 12-10 in the lead and both teams had everything to play for in the next period.

The second half began with end to end incidents and both sides could have added to their tally.

Despite the intensity of the play, it was not until 25 minutes into the half that Teddington scored the only points of that period with a converted try.

The home team were down to 14 men for the last 15 minutes but Whitgift could not get the elusive points to give them a surprise win.

This has been a remarkable season for Old Whitgiftian Rugby.

The club’s second team, the Wanderers, have won their league and for the first time in many years the club have been able to field a regular third XV, the Warriors, who incredibly also won their league. Last Saturday night these achievements were celebrated with a full house at the rugby club’s annual dinner.

Whitgift visit Petersfield in a play-off for promotion from the Surrey/Hampshire League this Saturday (3pm).
