Head coach John Young wants Old Whitgiftian to use the heartbreak they suffered when losing last year's play-off to inspire them to victory this season.

The Surrey One runners-up face Hampshire One runners-up Petersfield away from home this weekend in a one-off game to decide who gets promoted to the London Leagues.

They faced the same situation last season but lost to Sandown & Shanklin 17-10 and Young is hoping his side, who lost 19-10 to champions Teddington on Saturday, will want revenge for that experience.

"I think our chances are very good," he said.

"We have the experience of last year and coming into the game we are playing quite well.

"Last year we did really well and let ourselves down by not winning the league and a week after we lost the play-off we lost the Surrey Shield final, so there's a sense of unfinished business.

"This year Teddington were far and away the better side but I was quite pleased with our performance against them.

"They probably deserved to edge it but their last try was a bit of luck and we missed a couple of chances.

"We have a full compliment of players to choose from as well which we didn't have last year."

Croydon and Streatham-Croydon have been left with agonizing waits to discover their futures next season.

Two Chris Palmer tries and another from Craig Bond gave Croydon a 19-7 win over Old Walcountians to lift them up to third from bottom in Surrey One.

However, they must wait to see the results of the play-offs and how many Surrey teams go up and come down from the London leagues, before the Surrey RFU decide how many teams are relegated.

The same situation applies to Streatham-Croydon in Surrey Three after they suffered a demoralising 24-5 defeat to Worth Old Boys, James Batty getting their only try.

That, coupled with their four point deduction for fielding an ineligible player earlier in the season, saw them finish third from bottom and the likelihood is they will be relegated to Surrey Four.

Promoted Old Mid-Whitgitian rounded off their season in style with a 33-10 win over London Three South West champions Gosport and Fareham, while Chipstead thrashed Farnham 74-5 ahead of their Surrey Shield semi-final with Croydon this weekend.
