After a miserable week of drizzle and cold the visit of Whitgift to Old Walcountians was greeted with the discovery that the sun still existed.

The feel good factor was only increased by what must be the most magnificent view of London, Walcountians could supplement their income by making a charge for the experience.

The match was not quite as glorious but had moments of brightness and ultimately an exciting finale.

The Croydon side opened the scoring with a fifteen yard drive from a lineout.

Dunsmore was credited with the try and Butcher added the conversion points. Old Whitgiftians had further opportunities to increase their lead but poor handling in the backs became a problem. In fact it was Walcountians who scored next with an unconverted try in the corner after some lax tackling by the visitors.

Butcher then increased the Whitgift lead to 10-5 with a penalty from under the posts but they never looked comfortable and were increasingly penalised for basic errors. This gave the home team the chance to fight back and they put over two penalties - it could have been many more – to go into half time with the score at 11 – 10.

The visitors started the second half with a flourish and were denied a try by inches in the first few minutes by a spectacular last ditch tackle. But the penalty offences continued and Whitgift were lucky that Walcountians only added another three points in this period.

There followed a very scrappy twenty minutes before Butcher scored a further penalty to bring Whitgift within one point. But despite every effort they could not find the extra score to bring them a win.

Old Whitgiftians are still second in the league but they will need to up their game if they are to continue to be in with a chance of promotion.
