Old Whitgiftians built on victory over London Exiles the previous weekend with a hard-fought victory over Bec Old Boys at Croham Road on Saturday, writes Bob Schad.

New fly-half Graham Streete played with increasing authority as the game wore on, making several openings with the discreet use of the dummy and kicking and passing effectively.

The game started with the OWs on top, forcing a series of infringements from Bec and eventually gaining a penalty converted by full back Rob Butcher.

They then seemed to relax and following several missed tackles, Bec scored between the posts. Back on the attack, wing James Schad had a useful run, though the scrum failed to score from the ensuing forward drive.

However, shortly after, prop Woods scored following another rolling maul. With the OWs again on the attack a break by Streete led to No. 8 James Mount picking the ball off his toes to go over for a Butcher converted try.

The OWs relaxed again and missed tackles allowed Bec to score again, though just before half time the OWs countered with a penalty. 18 - 14 to the home side.

Ignoring the disadvantage of playing up the slope, Bec were soon on the attack. but strong tackling, particularly by centre Les Todd and scrum half Nathan Taylor kept them at bay until an unusual defensive error gave Bec their third try and a 19-18 lead.

Sub Andreas Dracoulis then came in on the wing, collected a loose kick, beat three Bec defenders with neat side steps and set up an attack which took the OWs into the Bec half where the remained for most of the rest of the match.

He was also involved in the next OW try giving a well timed pass to enable Tom Dunsmore to score.

The OW scrum now took over, making good ground with picking and driving, the backs, when allowed to have the ball, passed slickly, but it was a break by Dunsmore which gave Woods a chance to score his second try, leaving the OWs 30 -19 winners.
