Danny Wilson has backed his London Welsh side to sign off the first stage of the Championship season with a win when the Dragons host Plymouth Albion this weekend.

Following the Plymouth game the league takes a three-week hiatus as the British & Irish Cup looms into view, with Welsh locking horns with Moseley and Aberavon.

But Wilson wants all efforts focussed on seeing off Albion first.

He said: “Yes the new cup is important to us and it has caught the imagination of the players, but the priority is always going to be the league.

“We have got ourselves into a good position and it is important that we end the first set of fixtures on a high.

“I know people will look at Plymouth’s position and think we are at home so we should win, but they are a strong side.

“But I am confident that if we play to our ability we will win the game.”

London Welsh maintained their place in the play-off places with a hard-fought 19-10 win at Coventry last weekend, thanks to a Paul Mackey try and 14 points from the boot of Aled Thomas.

And Wilson was delighted with the display at the Butts Park Arena.

He added: “It was a really good win.

“To go there and produce a performance on the back of a poor game said a lot about our character.

“It was important for us to bounce back and we did.

“We were extremely professional and our defence was very aggressive.

“We have a lot of injuries to contend with at the moment and to go to a very difficult venue like Coventry and basically shut them down - I was very proud of the players.”

London Welsh’s next three matches: Nov 14 Plymouth Albion (h), 20 Moseley (BC, a), 27 Aberavon (BC, a)
