Coach Terry O’Connor and his team must have worked wonders ahead of Saturday’s performance of speed and commitment to Tring.

It was totally different from the previous weekend’s shocker at Haywards Heath as Sutton & Epsom spread the ball wide at every opportunity, off-loading with ease and always with players in support.

Full-back Keith Middleton cut swathes through the Tring defence coming onto the ball at pace and from deep, while number eight Chris Endersby took control at the base of the scrum, gaining his reward late in the game with a magnificent try.

Sutton were also solid in defence, closing down flying winger Tim Holgate who had scored five tries in the previous two meetings between the sides.

Sutton easily saw of some early Tring pressure and then with their forwards on top and winning everything spun the ball wide and played some spectacular and exciting rugby.

They soon opening the scoring when following a lineout five metres from the Tring line the Sutton pack drove over the line for lock Felix Symonds to get the touch down.

The conversion attempt went just wide.

From a long kick off Tring pinned Sutton back and fly-half Tom Newton kicked a penalty from in front of the posts.

Frost soon replied with a penalty for Sutton to restore the Sutton lead.

Then, following a magnificent charge up field by Bennett and Sutton’s captain scrum half Steve Munford hurtling down the tram lines on the left passing the ball between them Tring were forced to give away another penalty which Frost converted.

Late in the half on a rare visit to Sutton’s 22 Newton kicked another penalty for Sutton to lead 11-6 at the break.

Early in the second half Frost and Newton exchanged penalties and soon after Newton kicked his fourth to narrow Sutton’s lead to two points.

Despite this Sutton always looked in control and midway through the half an inch perfect kick into space behind the Tring defence saw Endersby pounding upfield to collect the ball and despite being tackled passed inside to centre Simon Green who ran round to score midway to the posts for an unconverted try.

Sutton could easily have scored at least three more tries at this stage had the final pass gone to hand but a Frost penalty soon stretched their lead to 10 points.

Sutton were rampant now running the ball from all parts of the pitch they worked a position 5m from the Tring line.

They were awarded a scrum and the pack drove forward, Endersby picked up at the base and charged the line only to be stopped a metre short but showing great strength and composure he forced his way forward then using every inch of his 6ft 4in frame stretched out to score wide on the left.

The conversion went begging but Sutton controlled the remainder of the game to come away winners for only the second time in the league this season.
