Warlingham had plenty to celebrate at last weekend’s Bournemouth Sevens Festival, claiming the championship trophy after going through the whole tournament unbeaten.

Tom Street led a 14-man squad for the last time as Warlingham captain, lifting the Guinness Cup on Sunday evening after his team had beaten Hove 19-3 in the final.

Warlingham’s sevens side has built up a formidable reputation over the past four years, since winning the Surrey county title.

Already this spring, Warlingham – using several youngsters from their academy, including the club's U18s player of the season Ant Braithwaite – have won the plate final at the East Kent Sevens.

The Bournemouth tournament is rapidly becoming the end-of-season highlight, attracting top clubs from across the country for a format of the sport which is seeking inclusion in the Olympic Games.

Warlingham’s competition included the likes of Cobham, Old Walcountians and the RAF. But none could match the disciplined squad from Hamsey Green – more than 20 players travelled to the Dorset coast, knowing that only 14 would be able to play in the tournament.

Planning has already begun for next season at Warlingham, with the club’s annual training camp – for all standards of player, from 15 to 50 – due to be staged in August, with a leading international player to attend as a guest coach. Past guest appearances have been made by Jason Leonard and Andy Robinson.

Warlingham are also seeking opposition for a pre-season friendly fixture at Hamsey Green to mark the official turning on of the club’s £20,000 new floodlights.
