London Welsh have confirmed the signing of Rotherham Titans prolific try scorer Errie Claassens.

A firm fans favourite at Rotherham, the South African full back/wing, 27, joined the Titans in August 2005 from the University of the Free State side Shimlas, Bloemfontein, before going onto make 87 appearances, including 38 tries, over his four seasons at the club.

Before joining Rotherham, Claassens, the brother of Bath’s South African international scrum half Michael, won representative honours with Free State at U19 and U21, as well as playing for the Free State Cheetahs and gaining Currie Cup experience with Griquas Rugby.

“London Welsh are a club with a lot of ambition; they want to move forward and they play rugby which is enjoyable and good to watch,” said Claassens.

“While Rotherham were semi-professional, London Welsh are a full-time club, so I am looking forward to being able to invest all of my time and energy into rugby.

“Competition in the Championship next season will be a lot stronger; it’s going to be a tough but exciting season.”

“Errie has been extremely effective for Rotherham throughout his time at the club, and he’s a player that will suit the expansive brand of rugby that we want to play,” said London Welsh head coach Danny Wilson.

“He’s a clinical finisher with a good left footed kicking game, and he stood out last month when we played the Titans at Clifton Lane.

"We are confident that he will be a real asset to London Welsh and are delighted to have secured his services for next season’s Championship.”
