Esher Rugby Club hosted its first end of season awards evening last week.

The evening, hosted by Esher Chairman of Rugby John Inverdale, was attended by over 200 people representing players from all 7 senior sides, and joined by supporters to celebrate the successes of the season and to make presentations for their player of the year.

The Supporter’s Player of the Year was presented by the Supporter’s Club to full-back Neil Hallett. Fan’s favourite Hallett has been with the club for 5 tears and this season scored his 1,000th point, making him second all time scorer at Esher, with the record in sight.

Whiz kid George Lowe, on loan from Harlequins Academy was voted by the players as Player of the Year. Lowe has had a tremendous season, scoring 12 tries in the league and 2 in the National Trophy.

Lowe’s performance this season earned him a call up to the England U20’s for their 6 Nations campaign, where he bagged 3 tries in 3 games, securing his spot in the squad for the Junior World Championships in Japan in June.

The Bill Edgerley Trophy, awarded in memory of a former First XV Captain, is awarded each season for outstanding contribution to the First XV.

The trophy was awarded to Paul Barker, who joined the club from Stourbridge in 2005 and has been a vital part of the first XV set up for the last 4 seasons.

The Nick George trophy is awarded each season to the club’s most successful senior squad. Nick George played in the Esher first XV for 5 seasons from the age of 18, an outstanding prop and versatile player and a great supporter of the club on and off the pitch.

The trophy was presented this season to the Esher veterans, the ‘Expendables’ who won 8 out of their 11 league games, and narrowly missing out on the Surrey Vets Division One title by a close defeat at the hands of Richmond Heavies.

Other Player of the Year awards went o Richard Bernal-Smith for the Cardinals (2nd XV), Joe Bordest for the Academy (3rd XV), Jeremy Best for the Priors (4th XV), Charlie Cornwall for the Friars (5th XV), Ben Robinson for the Esher B’s (6th XV) and Mark Roberts for the Expendables (Vets).
