A brave rearguard performance was not enough for Streatham as they fell to two converted tries against a superior Raynes Park outfit in this Surrey Three clash, writes Owen Jones.

Streatham’s recent form didn’t suggest there would be an upset at Raynes Park but recent performances did hint that a new found steely edge was coursing through the side.

This was evident as the hosts were made to work for their two points that once more brings them level at the top of the table with Old Blues.

Raynes Park scored in the first half to put Streatham on the back foot and after half-time dominated possession and territory but, at only 7-0 up with ten minutes to go knew that one slip up would see the visitors draw level.

Fine defensive performances from Ian Park and James Jackson held up a series of attacks with Gavin Calloo making a nuisance of himself at the breakdown.

But it was Charlie Greenhill, standing in at scrum-half, who gave his opposite number a torrid time, denying the Raynes Park three-quarters attacking ball and, helped by a heroic effort from the Streatham pack threatened to turn the game Streatham’s way.

The last ten minutes saw Raynes Park seal the win as they made their possession tell and rumbled over from close range.
