Most rugby fans in Twickenham may look back at the weekend with disappointment, but at least one Richmond pair of Irish eyes were left beaming.
Waldegrave School maths teacher Jackie Shiels lifted the Six Nations Championship crown with Ireland Women on Sunday thanks to a 73-3 win over Scotland in Glasgow.
It meant the 30-year-old centre, who plays for Richmond Women at the Athletic Ground, celebrated her 15th cap for her country in some style.
And while many Twickenham residents will havebeen drowning their sorrows last weekend, Waldegrave student Jennifer Barker was as pleased as punch.
“It’s kind of strange knowing that your maths teacher has another life as an international rugby player,” she said.
“We’re all really proud of her.”
