London Welsh have appointed Gordon Ross as assistant coach and backs coach.

Ross, who will continue to be registered as a player, will form part of the Exiles' new coaching set up, alongside newly appointed head coach Justin Burnell.

Ross, 35, has amassed 574 points in 106 appearances for the Exiles since joining the club in 2009 from Saracens, and played a leading role in London Welsh’s 2011/12 Championship success.

Last season Ross was also a key player last season in the Aviva Premiership campaign, taking the lead at fly half in the vast majority of games. In total, he made 18 appearances for London Welsh in the Premiership, scoring 173 points.

He won the first of his 25 caps for Scotland in 2001 against Tonga, scoring a record debut 23 points and went on the summer tour to North America.

Confirmation of Ross’ appointment caps a big few days for the former Scotland international, who tied the knot with partner, Holly, last Saturday.

Gordon Ross said: “I’ve worked under some very good coaches over the years and hopefully I can use some of things I’ve picked up from them with the London Welsh squad next season.

“It was disappointing last year to get relegated, but this is a new challenge.

"There are a lot of new faces at the club but I’m looking forward to working closely with Justin to get the squad gelling together as quickly as possible so we’re ready for the start of the Championship season.

“I’ve heard some very positive things about Justin and I now just can’t wait to get on with the job.

“I will still be registered as a player. I still love playing and if I’m called upon I will, as always, give my all for London Welsh.”

New London Welsh Head Coach Justin Burnell said: “I am very excited about the prospect of working with Gordon. He has been hugely influential in the successes of London Welsh over the last couple of seasons as a player and I am sure that he will have the same impact as a coach.

“I have already contacted Gordon and have heard nothing but favourable reports about him. He is the supreme professional and I doubt we have seen his last performance in a London Welsh shirt.”
