Kingston netballer Hannah Reid’s Co-Operative Superleague grand final dream fell short at the final hurdle as Surrey Storm crashed 52-47 to Hertfordshire Mavericks in the play-offs on Friday night.

Head coach Mary Beardwood’s finished top of the final standings, but lost to Team Bath last week in their first play-off before failing to cash in on a second bite of the cherry seven days later.

Surrey had led 39-37 in the final quarter, but some key shooting errors let Mavericks back in to earn their place in Saturday’s final at the Nottingham Trent FM Arena.

“I have to say my team were fantastic and I am very proud of them,” said former England coach Beardwood.

“We had a five minute spell though where we just made crucial mistakes and we couldn’t recover.

“We are all disappointed with the result, but all credit to Mavericks who played extremely well and put us under tremendous pressure.

“We have to be proud of what we have achieved in our first season, our fans, support staff, players, everyone at Storm has done a fantastic job.

“I’ve absolutely loved it, oh yes it was well worth coming our of retirement for.”
