Surbiton Ladies clinched the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference East title, and became the first team to qualify for the promotion playoffs, after a hard-fought 2-0 win over sixth-placed Harleston Magpies at Sugden Road on Sunday.
Becky Merchant slotted home a penalty stroke in the 28th minute, before Amy Bryant converted a penalty corner with just two minutes remaining. Surbiton, who collected £750 in prize money from the league sponsors, face the ninth-placed team in the Premier Division and the champions of the Conference North and Conference West in a four team round-robin tournament.
The play-offs kick-off on March 31 with the top two teams will play in the Premier Division in 2012-13.
Surbiton travel to Sevenoaks on Saturday for their last league match of the season (push back 2 pm), before turning their attention to the Investec Women’s Cup semi-final against Clifton, fifth in the Premier Division on Sunday.
