With most athletes eyeing the London 2012 Olympics, one British sprinter is hoping the 30th Olympiad can open the door for him to an international vest next year.

Balham’s AJ Boyce is making great strides in the sport and already has a personal 100m best of 11.17 seconds – despite only taking the sport seriously since November last year.

The 19-year-old Herne Hill Harrier is not short of confidence and believes he can better the World Indoor Games qualifying mark this winter to force himself into the reckoning for next March’s event in Turkey.

But, with the likes of Dwain Chambers and Sutton & District’s Harry Aikines-Aryeetey focusing their attention on the London 2012 Games, he reckons a sprint relay spot at the European Championships in Finland – which finish a month before the Olympics – remains a realistic goal if he doesn’t make the grade for the world stage.

“I feel my strengths give me the potential to be able to get within the qualifying time for the World Indoors,” said Boyce, who has an indoor best of 7.04.

“Actually getting picked would be hard because I would say Dwain and Harry are in the frame for places in the team.

“I believe the work I’m doing in training – with my technique and my power – means that time is possible.

“The Europeans, will again be very hard to get to as the competition to be in that team will be from the athletes who didn’t make 2012.

“But I feel a relay spot is a target. There is a lot of people who could be shortlisted for the Games, however it depends on my own and their development from now on.

“I believe that if I’m healthy and with the work I’m putting in, anything is possible.”

He added: “With some extra funding I’d be able to travel to get to some of the fastest races in the UK and Europe to get the times I need. “It would lift some pressure off my shoulders.”
