Hercules Wimbledon runners dominated the weekly Wimbledon Common parkrun with club runners filling the top three places.

Teenager Joe Toomey, having his first race for four months and only his second of the year, headed the 250-strong field home in crossing the line in 17 minutes 33 seconds.

It was 41 seconds faster than he managed when he finished sixth in the event in July. It was also the second time in 16 appearances that he had been overall winner of the event.

Toomey was followed in by two Hercules Wimbledon veterans Stuart Fraser and Peter Lee who clocked 17:43 and 17:55, respectively. Almost a dozen Hercules Wimbledon runners took part in the event. Andrew Davies was sixth in 18:24, Charles Hampden-Smith 23rd and first over 50 finisher in 19:43 and Charles Lawrie was second over 60 finisher in 21:51.

At the other end of the age scale, 12-year-old Isabella Padt clocked a personal best time in finishing 72nd and eighth in the women's race in 22:12, chopping 59 seconds off her previous best time set in October last year.

Teenager Cassian Hyde also clocked a personal best in finishing 16th out of almost 800 runners in the Bushy Park parkrun in 17:40. Hyde sliced seven seconds off the time he posted on his debut appearance last month. Top Hercules Wimbledon finisher was Matt Sharp who finished eighth in 16:37, just three seconds outside his best time for the course.

The Halloween Horror four miles multi-terrain event staged in near darkness at Moreton Morell, Warwickshire, lived up to its name for Hercules Wimbledon's Colin Bricher.

"There was a lot of trekking through the undergrowth and the paths were not very well lit, particularly after someone had removed some of the lights," said Bricher, 65 last month.

"A number of us tripped in the undergrowth and then I managed to fall down a two foot drop hurting my back. It was lit and there was a marshal but I'm geriatric enough to struggle with this in daylight."

However, there was one piece of silver lining as he was awarded a bottle of wine as the oldest finisher.

Fresh from her victory in the Barns Green half-marathon in Sussex, marathon runner Claire Grima won the women's event in the Killerton parkrun in Devon. She clocked 19:19 to beat husband David by 70 seconds. He finished 13th out of almost 130 runners.

Hercules Wimbledon runners were prominent in the Roehampton University team which contested the second of this season's London Colleges cross country league race in Richmond Park. The university have rejoined the league after an absence of more than 10 years. Top Hercules Wimbledon performer was Zoe Shannon who was fifth out of 66 runners in the women's 2.7 miles race in 16:09. Elizabeth Glazebrook was 34th in 20:07. Chris Donnellan was 61st out of 123 runners in the men's 5.3 miles race in 32:56.

Alex Bruce-Littlewood, who made history at his American university by becoming the first Londoner to receive the Athlete of the Week award, continued his impressive series of runs by finishing ninth out of more than 80 runners in the Southland Conference championships in Nacogdoches, Texas, covering the course of around five miles in 25:26.4, less than half-a-minute behind the race winner. Meanwhile, his dad, Stu, posted the eighth best time in the monthly Crystal Palace Canter over about there miles in 21:48.

A small Hercules Wimbledon contingent contested a seven miles inter-club cross country match in Richmond Park on Saturday. Phil Glynn was top finisher from the club taking fifth spot in 40:21 with veteran Frank Wood 10th in 46:13 and over 60 veteran Martin Miller 13th in 52:05.

This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon runners compete in the second of this season's 2XU Surrey men's cross country league meetings at Ham. The club's young athletes will be aiming to continue the winning start they made to this season's programme when they took the team honours in last month's opening match on Wimbledon Common. They also performed well in the opening East Surrey League fixture at Lloyd Park, Croydon, where Tim Livingstone led the team to runners-up spot in taking individual second place.

The club fielded a record nine runners in the under 13 race at Croydon and the youngsters are again expected to run at Ham where the young athletes race over 2.5 miles starts at 2.30pm. The senior five mile race starts at 3pm.
