An England side featuring four Richmond players will face favourites New Zealand Black Ferns in the World Cup final after a hard-fought 20-14 semi-final victory over hosts Canada.

Jenny Sutton, Jenny Lyne, Sharon Baker and Twickenham resident Vanessa Gray are vying for a place in the squad for the showpiece event, which takes place at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Sunday at midnight BST.

The semi-final was a big occasion for lock Sutton, who has previously worn the Canadian jersey before changing her allegiance in 1998 after moving to England, for whom she has won more than 50 caps Sutton, Lyne and Gray played as England beat France 27-8 to set up the semi-final match against Canada, and were then joined by Baker - and former Richmond player Kelly McCallum - in the victory over the host nation, widely acclaimed as the match of the tournament so far.

Gray said: "We had a big job on our hands and there was no let-up from the Canadians.

"We showed tremendous spirit though to see off the home side, who played the game of their lives."

The Kiwis cruised into the final with a 40-10 victory over France, keeping their hopes of three consecutive world titles alive.

Richmond also supplied four players for the Scotland side who defeated Ireland 11-10 to set up a fifth-place play-off against the US on Sunday.

Wing Chris Ovenden, who scored Scotland's only try, was joined on the pitch by clubmates Karen Findlay, Clare Muir and Erin Kerr.
