Hercules Wimbledon's top javelin thrower Bekele Tola made a winning return to competition after an absence of three years when he competed in a Southern men's league Division One match at Twickenham on Saturday.

Bekele emerged after three traumatic years during which he underwent a kidney transplant. He has managed to keep fit through weight training and his appearance at Twickenham was the first time he had thrown a javelin since August 2008. Bekele, 41, achieved a winning throw of 52.18m to break the Hercules Wimbledon veterans over 40 record. He improved on the throw of 49.80m set by John Webster in 1990.

"It is great to be competing again," said Tola, who plans to turn out in the club's next Southern League match at Woking on July 30th. "At one point I wasn't sure I would be able to compete again. Before I had my transplant I was undergoing dialysis three times a week. But I'm pleased to say I'm fine now," said Tola. He also competed in the shot.

Another Hercules Wimbledon veteran to return to action after a long absence was Geoff Walcott. Walcott chose the World Masters Championships in Sacremento for his first competition for almost two years. The last time he competed was at the World Masters Championships in Finland in August 2009 where he competed in the over 55 200 and 400m. Walcott, 59, who has dogged by injury for the past two years, just failed to make the veterans over 55 100m final in Sacremento after finishing third in his heat in 12.89 seconds and fifth in his semi-final in a slightly swifter 12.86. He was also due to compete in the 200 and 400m.

Apart from Tola's win, Hercules Wimbledon had a string of successes at Twickenham. Teenager Andrew Penney gained a middle-distance double winning the 1500m in 4:10.9 and the 800m B race in 2:01.5. He later helped the 4x400m relay team to second place. Alex Robinson, regaining his best form after injury, secured maximum points in the 1500m in winning the B race in 4:13.4 and was also second in the 800m A race. Teenager Tim Livingstone, running as a non-scorer, sliced half-a-second off his previous best in finishing second in the B race in 2:02.6.

Kieran White and James Davies also gained maximum points in the 5000m . White set a Hercules Wimbledon over 35 veterans record in winning the A race in 16:08.3 with Davies taking the B race in 16:17.2. Cale Edmunds (6.60m) and Jonathan Grayson (6.17m) also gained maximum points in winning the long jump A and B competitions. Grayson had a busy afternoon also taking second spot in the high jump and 110m hurdles B events, and finishing fourth in the triple jump A before running a leg for the 4x400m relay team. Team captain Steve Davies was runner-up in the sprint hurdles in 16.8 before running the opening leg for the 4x400m relay team.

Sprinter Richard Agyapong showed his best form of the summer in finishing runner-up in the 100 and 200m A races in 11.2 and 22.8. Olu Aduwusi won the 100m B race in 11.3 and teenager Jonathan Osbourne won the 200m B race in a personal best of 22.7. Agyapong, Osbourne, Aduwusi and Joseph Chukwuadinula combined to take second place in the 4x100m relay, the same time as the winners.

Teenager Rebecca Dinsdale and Emily Martin both gained a double successes in the Southern Women's League match at Crawley. Dinsdale won the girls under 15 shot and discus events with 7.38 and 20.70m. She was also fourth in the javelin. Martin won the senior 100m in 12.7 and long jump with 5.38m. Martin was also second in the javelin and third in the shot and hammer. Her mum Ann was third in the hammer B.

On the track, Amy Aronson and Steph and Claire Grima gained maximum points in the 1500m winning the A and B races in 5:29.0 and 5:30.8 while Claire Grima won the 3000m in a personal best of 10:26.1 with Aronson winning the B event. Rachael Dinsdale set a veteran over 40 club record in finishing third in the javelin B as well as winning the shot B, and taking second place in the discus.

Hugh Saxby was top over 50 veteran in Claygate Country five miles multi-terrain race on Sunday in 29:51, finishing ninth out of more than 400 runners. He posted the top age-graded performance with clubmate Pete Giles, the first over 65 finisher in 41st place in 33:37, posting the second best age-graded effort.
