Four-time Olympic champion Sir Matthew Pinsent has backed the Molesey rower to rediscover his golden touch in the capital next year.

The 27-year-old was part of Great Britain’s men’s four team that clinched a dramatic gold in 2008, pipping Australia to the top step by just 1.28 seconds.

James took a year out following that win, yet his return to action in 2010 was plagued by hip and back injuries - reducing him to role of spectator.

But after storming to gold at the first World Cup in May and then again at the third in Switzerland on Sunday, Pinsent believes James is on the track for Olympic stardom.

“To come back the way he has and back into a four boat that has been really solid this year is just a testament to his pedigree,” said Pinsent.

“I can’t praise him enough for that. I just hope he gets the reward he deserves at the Games next year.”

The men’s four team has changed dramatically since 2008 - James being the only one remaining - but they have shown no signs of slowing down.

Pinsent has pinpointed the team as one of Team GB’s best medal hopes for London 2012 and is convinced James will deliver.

“The men’s four will be absolutely one of our bankers for gold, at the World Championships, the World Cup and at the Olympic Games,” Pinsent added.

“But with being a banker also comes that pressure, so I hope he can live up to it and I am confident they can.”

And while Pinsent is talking up the crew’s chances, James insists he is not getting carried away with their win in Lucerne.

“I'm sure that other crews will change and the field will be very different at the Worlds later this year and as we move into Olympic year, so we won't be big-headed,” he added.
