Harlequins RL youngster Dan Sarginson says choosing rugby league ahead of union paved the way to making his top flight rugby debut before receiving his A level results.

The 18-year-old Kingston-based star scored a memorable double on his Super League debut last week against Salford City Reds having progressed through the ranks at the Stoop.

The Hemel Hempstead-born star had a choice between signing up with Aviva Premiership champions Saracens and Quins when he was 14-years-old.

And Sarginson admits that while it hasn’t all been rosy at the Stoop this summer, he has been pleased with his decision so far.

“I started out playing rugby union but also got into playing league at Hemel Hempstead Stags and it went from there really,” he said.

“I had to make the decision between Saracens and Quins and I’m glad I came here. I doubt I would have played in the Premiership at my age if I’d stayed at Sarries.

“I’ve got a few goals I’ve set myself this season and a with a few injuries around it looks like I’ll have the chance to play some more minutes.

“I’ve just got make sure I take those chances.”

Sarginson, who shares a flat with team-mates Jamie O’Callaghan and Ben Bulger, has completed A levels in Maths, Biology and PE.

But will put his education on hold - irrespective of his results - to concentrate on his rugby.

“I can see myself staying at Quins for a long time,” he added.

“I’m going to take a year off to concentrate on my rugby and see where it takes me.”

Quins, who had three first-half efforts disallowed, were humbled 38-6 by Wigan Warriors at the Stoop on Saturday, having only trailed 14-6 at the break.

Head coach Rob Powell fumed: “I don't understand the role of the in-goal touch judge, who is giving tries, if they're going to be scratched off by a sideline touch judge, who is 50 metres away.

“Two of them have clearly been given and then taken off by someone else. We actually scored three tries in the first half and on review I think they're all fair tries.”
