Rowing team manager Gemma Lloyd said: “Lots of our rowers in Richmond are members of local clubs.

“We don’t get much of an opportunity to use the lake boats they use at the London Youth Games, but they are pretty well rehearsed and ready.”

In the kayak, 14-year-old Alison Martin, of St Catherine’s School, won the kayak sprint female cirrus gold and 12-year-old Alice Buckley of Lady Eleanor Holles School won gold in the kayak sprint female lightning class.

Alice said: “I am really proud because I haven’t been paddling for very long. It is also the first medal I’ve won at the London Youth Games. It was an amazing experience and I loved it.”

Meanwhile, Richmond girls’ team have made it through to the volleyball finals of the Games after making it through the qualifying rounds unbeaten at Score Sport Centre, Leyton, on Saturday.

They beat Brent 25-21, Enfield 25-10, Tower Hamlets 25-10, City of Westminster 26-16, Ealing 25-10, Kingston 25-13 and Waltham Forest 25-12 and will be joined in the finals at Crystal Palace on July 2 by Wandsworth, Waltham Forest and Kensington & Chelsea.
