Surbiton Ladies’ preparation for the second half of the England Hockey League season suffered a setback on Sunday, when Sevenoaks won 1-0 at Sugden Road.

Jet Van Zalen, who was Sevenoaks’ scorer in both the league and cup meetings in October, scored the only goal of the game in the 49th minute from open play.

In spite of the scoreline, Surbiton were unlucky not to at least earn a draw, as Jessica Brooker had a penalty stroke saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper, Gill Thomson in the 46th minute; and Vicky Bryant was denied an equaliser as she was touched by the ball before hitting it across the goal-line, therefore the goal was disallowed.

Surbiton’s plans were also disrupted the previous Wednesday, when the scheduled match versus Barnes Hounslow Ealing was cancelled. Surbiton complete their preparation with a visit to Stowe School to play EHL Conference West leaders, Buckingham on Sunday.

Buckingham won 4-2 at Reed’s School in August, Jessica Brooker scoring both of Surbiton’s goals.
