Sutton gained two winners in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Lord Mayor's mile in the City of London on Saturday.

More than 300 runners took part in the six age categories in the event which was being held for the second year as a curtain raiser for the Lord Mayor's Show.

Last year, Sutton's Tom Holden won the 11-12-year-old event.

James Hancock, who trains with Sutton & District at Sutton Arena, won a close battle in this year's boys 11-12-year-old event, winning by two seconds in 5 minutes 21 seconds.

After running in front of thousands of spectators who were lining the street for the Lord Mayor's Show, Hancock, who goes to Overton Grange School, said: "There was one guy just two metres ahead of me and I caught him right on the line. I was trying to follow the leader and then try to win it. I'm good at sprint finishes."

He added that Britain's double European track champion Mo Farah was his "inspiration" and as Holden had won last year it was good for Sutton to win again.

Sutton's second success came in the Girls 11-12-year-old category where Keauna Phillips-Darko beat the field to win by 15 seconds in 5:20.

Other Sutton runners in the top 10 were Jordan Maurice, seventh in the 15-17 boys event, and Emer Kerr and Steph McCall, seventh and eighth in the girls 15-17 event.

Richmond also gained a winner with Walton Athletic Club's Hugo Fleming heading home the boys 13-14-year-olds field in 4:28. He held off Croydon's Peter Chambers (4:31).

Fleming, a pupil at St Paul's, Barnes said: "Coming down the finish I saw I had the opportunity to really put in a kick and I won – brilliant. I did the mini marathon and this was very similar. It’s just brilliant to run in London. It was a brilliant atmosphere, the crowd were really good."

He added: "I'm aiming towards a career in sport, so this is one of the steps along the way." He also competes in modern pentathlon.

Other leading Richmond runners were Hannah Novakovic, fourth in the 11-12 girls event, Molly Riglin, fifth in the 15-17 girls race and Eliza Cottingham, ninth in the girls 13-14 race.

Kingston's top runners were Josh Bartholomew and Alice Clemens who were both eighth in the 11-12 boys and 13-14 girls events.

Best runner for Wandsworth was Jade Strud who was runner-up in the 13-14 girls race in 5:41, just seven seconds behind the winner.

Wandsworth's Natalija Woolny was 11th in the 11-12 girls race and Tim Livngstone 10th in the 13-14 boys event.

Merton's top finisher was Hugh Train who was 21st in the 15-17 boys race.

* Most of the competitors in the Lord Mayor's mile will be in action for their boroughs again this weekend when they compete in the London Youth Games cross country championships at Parliament Hill Fields on Saturday. However, Sutton and Kingston are among four boroughs not sending teams to the event. The first race is at 11am.
